Get started
Install
Requirements, building Nuvo from source, and packaged builds for Linux.
Nuvo targets Linux. Packaged builds are an AppImage and a .deb.
chmod +x Nuvo-*.AppImage
./Nuvo-*.AppImagesudo apt install ./nuvo_*_amd64.debpnpm install
pnpm devRequirements
| Needed | For |
|---|---|
| A Secret Service keyring (GNOME Keyring, KWallet or compatible) | Storing the library key. Without one, Nuvo keeps the key in a private file that you can seal with a passphrase. |
yt-dlp and a JavaScript runtime (deno, node or bun) |
Optional. Pasted video links and song recognition. |
ffmpeg |
Optional. Saving as MP3 and song recognition. |
Nuvo finds yt-dlp and ffmpeg on your PATH and in ~/.local/bin. Playback does not need them. Settings has a dependency check that tells you what is missing.
Packaged build
Build the AppImage and the .deb:
pnpm install
pnpm electron:build:linux
The files appear in release/:
Nuvo-<version>.AppImagenuvo_<version>_<arch>.deb
Install the .deb with your package manager, or make the AppImage executable and run it.
Build requirements
- Node 22 with pnpm
- A stable Rust toolchain
- SQLCipher
Run from source
pnpm install
pnpm dev
pnpm dev builds the daemon in debug mode and starts the app. On a Wayland session you can force X11 with pnpm dev:x11, which is useful for testing the Notch.
Check your build
pnpm check # lint, format, build, dependency check, tests
pnpm core:test # daemon tests and clippy
Windows and macOS
The build configuration lists Windows (NSIS) and macOS (dmg, zip) targets. They are not tested. Linux is the supported platform.
Unsigned builds
Nuvo’s builds are unsigned for now. A Windows code signing certificate and an Apple developer account cost money every year, and Nuvo is free, so the project does not pay for them yet. Your system cannot tell who made the file, so it may warn you the first time you open it. The warning says the publisher is unknown. It does not mean a virus was found.
Check the file first. Release pages list SHA-256 checksums:
sha256sum -c SHA256SUMS --ignore-missing
gh attestation verify <file> --repo Ziuziuk-Denys/nuvo
Windows. SmartScreen shows “Windows protected your PC”. Choose More info, then Run anyway.
macOS. The first open is blocked.
- Move Nuvo to Applications and open it once. Close the warning.
- Open System Settings, then Privacy & Security.
- Scroll to Security and press Open Anyway next to Nuvo. Confirm with your password.
If macOS says the app is damaged, remove the download flag in a terminal and open it again:
xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Nuvo.app
Linux. Packages install without this kind of warning. Make the AppImage executable with chmod +x. Your package manager may note that a .deb or .rpm file is not from a repository.
Uninstall
Remove the package or the AppImage. To remove your data, delete the paths in the table in the introduction and the nuvo-core entry (item master-key) in your keyring. Deleting the key makes the database unreadable.
